Originally published inserial formin an Italian newspaper in 1894, Pirandello s first novel addresses European society and women s roles in it at the turn of the century. Conflicts between modernity and tradition are the driving force behind the story of fictional protagonist Marta Ajala, whose husband and father bond over a masculine solidarity under which her mother and sister can only suffer silently. The novel deals with themes of infidelity, false accusation, the status of women, and other societal issues.
